Looking for birth details for a John Widdicombe, of Ugborough who died in 1830 and married Joan Martin in Ugborough in 1774. On his burial entry from Ugborough, 22 Jan 1830 its states he was 80 yrs old at death.
This is his grave in Ugborough
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/204432842/john-widdicombe

Cannot pin down a definite place/date of birth for him

I attach some notes I found on the Widdicombe family that were attached to a public tree on ancestry, which mention John Widdicombe in point No 11. I suspect that the "brother" Samuel named, may have been his son, who lived at Ware Farm, as I cannot seem to find a Samuel Widdicombe born around the same time as John is supposed to have been born in the FindMyPast records. These notes are from user jhp2720 's public tree on ancestry.com
It says they came to Ugborough from elsewhere. Perhaps point 10 has some clues.

His wife Joan's background/origins are a little harder to pin point, which I'm also trying to find if possible.
The notes I attach say that John married Joan Crocker in 1774.
There is a marriage to a Joan Martin in 1774 in Ugborough to which a Jn. Martin was a witness https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-78WT-F

see also https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6FDR-PQ  - this predates the marriage - but does not seem to hold any clues as to his wife's origins

No Widdicombe / Crocker marriage that year (1774) that I can find in Ugborough

Therefore, I think Joan Martin & "Joan Crocker" may be one and the same person. Not sure how the ancestry user came to that conclusion.
She is also known as "Jenny" in several of her childrens' baptism entries.
She is buried at Ugborough 30 Nov 1809
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/204432820/joan-widdicombe

They had several children all born either Modbury or Ugborough:
John Widdecombe
1775–

Rebecca Widdecombe
1776–1829

Elizabeth Widdecombe
1777–1863

William Widdicombe
1779–1865

Jenny Widdecombe
1782–1806

Mary Ann Widdecombe
1785–1860

Peggy Widdecombe
1787–1861

Anne Widdecombe
1789–1790

Ann Widdicombe
1791–1861

Samuel Widdecombe
1794–1875

Sarah Widdecombe
1798–1829

any help appreciated

Not found his baptism.
Have you seen the entry on findmypast under "Directories and Social History"?
The 1816 Register of Freeholders gives John Widdecombe at WARE, Ugborough. He is stated to be 69 years old. It gives you another piece if evidence for his place of residence, and his age.
Doesn't seem to be a Samuel in the same list, though it throws up several hits for Samuel Widdecombe being in the papers in the later 1870s, and in 1867 there is. a listing for him residence HAY, Ugborough..Something to do with the 'petty constables' report. Perhaps it was related to the newspaper reports a couple of years later.

Hello
That burial entry
John Widdicombe 22.1.1830 of Ware is aged 84.
and Jane wife of John Widdicombe of Ware buried 30 Nov 1809
She did make a Will -(Consistory) Archdeaconry Court of Totnes but obviously most of the Wills were destroyed in the bombing. She is descibed of John Widdicombe gentleman.

The marriage 2.5.1774 is to Joan Martin.

Before that there seem to be no Widdicombes at Ugborough in the bmd for the parish but there is an entry for the Overseers  Accounts 1734
John Widdicomb is given money for the prosecution for the stealing of sheep.
It obviously can't be your John Widdicombe so surely it is his father.

The only baptism I can see for a father john are these.
Chudleigh s of John and Mary 6.1.1747  but with a possible burial 13.2.1747
Kineton s of John and elizabeth 2.7.1740 possible burial 1.12.1744
North Bovey s of John and Joan 16.2.1743

I'd go for the last one.

As for the Martin's looking at the parish records there seems to be a Peggy Martin born 1759 who I would assume is Joan's sister  and a John and Elizabeth having children buried there in 1750's ans sixties.
Marriage John Martin and Elizabeth Toupe at Modbury 12.6.1752 may well be her parents.
But they don't seem keen to baptise their children.

Joan Widdecombe's will of 1809 is on The National Archives site. At least an abstract of it is - as ciderdrinker says, most of the original Devon wills were lost in the bombing of Exeter. I think these abstracts were made for tax purposes. The transcription says she is the wife of John Widdecombe of 'Wyborough', but if you look at the actual entry it does say "Ugborough". You can download the entry for free at the moment.
It does seem to read as though her husband is still alive, and he is given as a 'gentleman'.

Thanks for the info on Widdecombe, I traced the family back to mid 1600s in North Bovery with records

The record I can't find on FindMyPast is Peggy Martin  you refer to. Could you pls let me know where you found that?

many thanks

Hello
Yes I looked at the parish records for Ugborough especially the marriages around 1774
So there is a Betty who married Robert Smalridge 19.3.1790
John married Sarah Rogers 16.6.1780
John married Betty Lang 4.11.1781
Mary married John Lemon 21.10.1778 buried 25.1.1790 wife of John
Peggy married Richard Moysey 12.9.1779 Margaret Moysey of the parish of Modbury  buried 20.12.1811 born 1759

Peggy was the only one I cold get a definiate birth year for and I know John and Joan had a daughter called Peggy.

But still no baptism
