English to/from Malaya late 1800s
« on: Monday 23 May 22 01:24 BST (UK) »
Hi
With help from ShaunJ we have located a John Martin on Gapis Estate at Padang Rengas, Perak in a 1898 plantation list.
How can I now find out when/how he arrived, whether he left and where in England he was from? Are there lists of expats working in The Straits?
Thank you
Sue

This might be worth searching: I've found a few nuggets of information there. Singapore and Malaya newspapers online.

Ancestry has Outward passenger lists from UK but those to Penang or Port Swettenham seem to be well after 1898. Do you have date of birth or death?
Have you looked at National Archives UK?

Hi,
Thank you so much for your help.
All we know about the mysterious John Martin is that he was English and fathered a child by a Malay subject in 1893/4. Very common name doesn’t help!
