Advice pleas
« on: Wednesday 25 May 22 19:02 BST (UK) »
Hi, any advice welcome. New here and to family history in general.
I believe that I may have Gypsy/traveller roots.. My father side is from Cambridgeshire area. Family names of Spinks and Benton. My Mother from Kent  with family names of Harris, Chittenden and Scott. All of these names appear to be travelling names according to certain lists. However I have found nothing conclusive on Find My Past. Are there any dedicated sites that could be of use. Thank you in advance

Hello,
How far back were the Chittenden and Scott side? I have a Crittenden/Chittenden with a granddaughter with the surname Scott from Kent and they were travellers.
May not be connected but could help you!
Not sure on the websites sorry.

You would be best looking for them on the various census entries to establish their occupations & where they lived.  Their childrens names can sometimes help to establish Romany origins

If you haven't already done so can I suggest you consider reading "My Ancestors were Gypsies" by Sharon Sillers Floate.

You may find your local Library has a copy or it can be purchased from many places - I just googled and found an example here https://genfair.co.uk/product/my-ancestors-were-gypsies-41447/

Although it was published a few years ago it explains the pointers you are looking out for in your research.

Hope this is of help.
