Thanks for all that. The Canadian Army Service record has some interesting bits in it. How annoying the BSA police records don't list him.
Gunsmith seems unlikely but then perhaps it is easy to mishear and write something wrong down - after all, I guess it was written by an official.
I wish I could find more of the BSA period and that he also served with the Canadian Mounted Police but that seems impossible.
