Finding the Grave of Thomas McGee
« on: Thursday 26 May 22 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hello there, After years of looking, DNA has come up trumps and I've managed to find out who my Husbands Grandfather was. The trouble I'm having now is finding where he is buried. He was born on 4th May 1885 in Glasgow and died on 3rd Jan 1939 in Bridgeton Glasgow. (just 9 months after marrying his 2nd wife Dorothy). Can anyone help me please. Thank you.

Hello,

There are several cemeteries around the Bridgeton area, including the Glasgow Necropolis (behind Glasgow Cathedral and the Infirmary), as well as the Southern Necropolis and (closest to Bridgeton), the Eastern Necropolis.  There are also cemeteries at Tollcross, Sighthill and Riddrie.

Depending on his religious denomination, there is also St Peter's Cemetery Dalbeth.

I'm not sure that there is an easy way of finding out.  Glasgow City Archives hold burial registers, but I don't think they have been digitised and you would have to go (or have a researcher go on your behalf) and trawl through them until you found him.  As you know when he died, that would save some time.

Best wishes

In fact, many of the historic records of Glasgow Cemeteries are online.
Look here https://www.familysearch.org/service/search/cat/search?query=%2Bsubject_id%3A532507%20

That's the good news.  The bad news is that they are not indexed, not complete, and often in faint or difficult handwriting.   But if you have a date of death, you can browse these by day.   I have found several records this way.  If you are lucky, there will also be a "Lair Record" that will show who else was buried in the plot, which may give you other family members..

Try this short URL   https://tinyurl.com/ytd8nxmk
(The full one is corrupt somehow).

Alternatively, you can go to FamilySearch website and search for GLASGOW in PLACES in their CATALOG.

My wife's family has strong Glasgow connections, so I've been looking through the online records that Greenrig highlighted.

Although the records are extensive, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that they must all just have placed folk under the floorboards, as I can't find any of them - even when there is a cemetery virtually on their doorstep!

If only they were indexed  ;D
