7-8 Graig Terrace, Pontypridd. What was it’s purpose!

 On the 1911, census I have two family members living here.  There are 30 people of all ages and families at this address with no occupations listed.  My family members are the youngest and oldest of a family, where the mother had remarried and is living with her new husband in another part of Pontypridd.   

     I know it is not the workhouse or infirmary buildings so could it be an annexe ?   It’s not a children’s home as some inhabitants are over 60.  Neither a ‘doss’ house or it would have occupations.

       Has anybody any suggestions or knowledge of it’s purpose.

I can't see a property with that many inhabitants in 1911 but in 1901 8 Graig Terrace was a Lodging House with 17 occupants

      The 1911 census I have is for no’s 7&8 Graig Terrace, but will take it that they were both lodging houses.   Must say though to house that many the inhabitants must have been ‘a little cramped’

       Graig Terrace if my memory serves me right are the usual terraced houses for ‘the valleys’.   Still cannot fathom why my aunt, abandoned her youngest daughter at 10 yrs of age, hopefully she was looked after by her 21 yr old brother.   When she remarried the remaining family moved to Llantrisant Road, which are very big houses near the University.  Different times I know but still .

FindMyPast has transcribed address as "3 and 8 Graig Terrace"

Looking at the Enumerator's list it is described -
"7 (poorly written) - 8 Graig terrace, shop below, Boarding House, Mrs Marsh, 24 men, 7 women"

Re. the "little cramped" Emma did not include number of rooms but No. 5 shows 3 rooms and No.6 shows 2 rooms.

Boarding House "Nos 9-12 + 12a" has 33 occupants and Boarding House "Nos 17-22" has 52 occupants!

 A huge thank you to all.   

      Today we can not envisage living in such overcrowded dwellings,  thank goodness. 31 people in two bedrooms with a shop on the ground floor,  not just 7-8 Graig Terrace but looks like the whole row. They must have been using the beds in a shift pattern, one out the next in. How awful.
