Engines convert energy from one form to another. In ancient times there were Siege Engineers who built various war machines (catapults, rams, etc)  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/engine.

In early censuses the term "Engineer" could mean "Inventor" as in ingenious which shared an original linguistic root.

Re: Engineer in Coal Mining Ireland 1800s

My 3x great grandfather was an engineer working for Mining Company of Ireland 1840s-1880 in Co. Tipperary, Ireland.
In 1878 and 1879 he published academic article/letter in NATURE journal.
I cannot find his origins (b. abt 1820s)....first record of him is 1849, married in Ballingarry parish. He is not found in Griffiths Valuations, only on baptismal records of 3 of 4 children in Ballingarry parish.

In looking at his article/letter, he was highly educated in engineering and geology. His thought process, writing, drawings, analysis lead me to believe he was educated beyond learning the trade on the job. I have thought he was imported by the MCI to work as engineer and that he received particular education beyond classic training. Can't find institutes in Scotland, England or Wales open at that time. He would have needed money for this education?
Any thoughts? Leads?
Thank you!

It's noticeable when looking at job vacancy websites that there are adverts to fill all sorts of modern engineers.

I can guess at this railway station vacancy, but would my guess be right?

                  "Technical Assurance engineer"

There is a tendency, particularly these days, for job descriptions to be inflated, to make them look more important. Half a century ago, as a new Engineering graduate, I applied for a job as a Production Engineer with Cadbury. That is a job I expected to involve planning and designing production lines. What they actually wanted was foremen and forewomen to oversee the staff working on the production lines.

It seems no one has a job anymore however lowly. Everyone seems to have a profession and career nowadays.

I expect my ancestors would be food supply chain facilitators, equine logistics operatives and marine collection specialists, instead of agricultural labourers, carters and fishermen :-)
