Help finding info on Irish ancestors
« on: Thursday 02 June 22 18:18 BST (UK) »
I have 3 families that came over from Ireland Peter Doyle he was an engineman on his son James Doyles marriage certificate in 1856.   He was born in Cumberland in 1830 and cant find his birth details to confirm who his mother was.   I cant find James living with Peter at any point in Cumberland, I would love to find Peter in Ireland.  I found him living as a lodger with his daughter Rachel in 1851 and it says Engine driver, so hoping its the same one.

Next family moved from Ireland are Peter Ryan b 1806 and Catherine McAlvery b 1815, which was the names on their son Peters birth cert.  I have them living at Bishop Auckland by 1851, they had 2 children born in Ireland before Peter, Margaret 1835 and William 1838.  I dont know which part of Ireland they came from and again would love to find out more info of them in Ireland.

Last family were McMillan I found their marriage in Ireland which I have attached, but would like to find more out about them.  They lived in Gateshead from 1848 when first son John was born in Jarrow.

Any help or point in the right direction for any of these 3 families would be great.

Thanks
Angela

The problem with transcriptions is that they may contain errors and the one you've attached is no exception. Always best to look at original if possible. In this case the marriage registration itself is viewable online (free)- groom's father is Josias not Jonas. Also, witness is Feares not Ferress.

Siblings for Mary Ferris perhaps? Variations of spelling of surname

Marriage of Jane Ferris 1849 - same residence and Robert Feris  is a witness again

The surname on your marriage certificate looks like McMullen not McMillan  :-\

Agree with heywood ....... McMullen.

And both he and Mary were living in the townland of Cabra [sic].

Two possibilities-

Many thanks for your replies.  Yes McMillan and McMullen appeared as several versions of spellings over the years in census, probably the way they spoke.

The certificates you attached are so hard to read.  I cant read the address on either of them.

I am still hoping the Peter Doyle is the right person, dont understand why James was not living with him in 41 and 51.

I did have the 41 census, but with him having a different occupation, unless he only started doing engine driving after 41.

Still nothing on Peter Ryan and Catherine McAlvery.

Thanks Angela

A household return for 1841 & 1851 census in England listed only people who were present in the property on census day/night.
Were there engines for him to drive/operate there in 1841? I imagine engine driving/operating may have been a job a man had to be trained for and promoted to. What kind of engine would it have been?
