Great grandmother missing from 1921 census?
« on: Saturday 04 June 22 15:58 BST (UK) »
Has anyone any tips for finding people on the 1921 census? Or are there missing pages like some of the earlier censuses?
My great grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Derham (nee Stride). She was born on 27 Jan 1866 (although in 1939 reg her dob is exactly one year out) at Chewton, Milton, Hants. Censuses post -marriage have her place of birth as Christchurch or Highcliffe. She was widowed in 1903
In 1911 she was living at Stanley Road Highcliffe (no house number recorded) with unmarried son Bertie.
She was living in Stanley Road in 1914 and 1918, because she is listed as NOK on my grandfather's service record when he enlisted and again, after his first wife died after a very short marriage.
In 1939 she was living at the Cottage, Stanley Road, which I suspect was No 1, because No 3 comes straight after it on the register. Living with her was a different unmarried son, recorded as Walter J (Edward Walter James Derham). Walter is also awol in 1921.

I have tried searching for her with every variant of Derham I can think of. Address search brings up one household in Stanley Lane Highcliffe which isn't her, and also Stanley Road in Bournemouth, which is actually in Boscombe near where my grandfather used to live, so a different Stanley road altogether.

any advice please?

You could take the surname out and put in first names, birth year and place you think she was living.

What year was son Walter born please?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The spring and autumn 1921 electoral registers may be online. Can they help in some way (I can't see them myself)
Elizabeth Ann Derham in Highcliff.
Parliamentary Constituency of Hampshire, New Forest & Christchurch Division.

Elizabeth Ann Derham in Highcliff.
Parliamentary Constituency of Hampshire, New Forest & Christchurch Division.

She is in Stanley Lane, Highcliffe in 1920 /1921

In 1920 also James Derham and possibly Arthur Derham though no road name listed against his name.

1921 has Arthur listed again with no road name

Thank you, both.
Arthur would probably be with her in 1920 and early 1921. He married for the 2nd time on 16 April 1921 and is at a different address in 1921 with new wife.
James would be Edward Walter James, my mother knew him as uncle James, she didn't know he was Edward Walter James until we did FH  research

There is an Elizabeth Deerham (1862)  & James Deerham  (1888) showing with Highcliffe as their birth place on the 1921 census, have you discounted them

ADDED Also listed Annie Adams 1915 & William Oliver 1898

Thank you, ages somewhat out, but worth looking into. Two of Elizabeth's daughters married Adams brothers so Annie might be grandchild. She unofficially adopted the son of deceased friends who might be William Oliver - the name rings a bell now

got the image now.
the form has been filled in by someone else, she signs Derham at the bottom in completely different handwriting. Annie Adams is granddaughter, but William Oliver is a lodger. He works at same place as James. Maybe adopted son appears a bit later. Family story says he was son of a neighbour
