24877 Pte Patrick Sheridan - Royal Irish Fusiliers
« on: Sunday 05 June 22 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

As always I need some help regarding:

24877 Fusilier Patrick Sheridan - Royal Irish Fusiliers
DOB: 9 June 1896, Dundalk Ireland

I cannot find any WW1 documents ie service record or pension record.  I know many documents have been destroyed.

He served 7 Sep 1914 - 1 April 1918

His medal card indicates his battalion served in the Balkans? I do not know which battalion he served with or whereabouts in the Balkans he served.   Did he serve in France ?

He was awarded a Silver War Badge - No 373742 War Office No B/687 certificate 373.742 I also cannot find out what wounds he suffered with.

My main wish is to know the battalion so as I can find his battalions war dairies.

Regards
Keith

Not sure if this is any help, but he was reported in the casualty lists in the newspaper on 22/1/1917. A check of the war diaries for the RIF around this date might lead to a clue?

The 1914-15 Star medal roll records that he entered the Balkans "Gallipoli and Aegean Islands" theatre of war on 7 August 1915. That was the date that 5th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers landed at Sulva Bay (Gallipoli).

ShaunJ,

You have helped open a door.

I shall look at the war diaries for the 5th battalion

Medal Roll also states he served in the 1st. Btn. RIF after the 5th.
The 5th. remained in Egypt until the end of April 1918 & as your man
was discharged on the 4th. April 1918 means he at some point was
transferred to the 1st. Btn. who served in France for the duration.

Jim1,

I have a copy of Patrick’s medal card, but I cannot see the issue of the 1914/15 Star? So obviously he wasn’t awarded it?
