Meaning of sign on gravestone
« on: Sunday 05 June 22 21:02 BST (UK) »
While visiting my great grandparents grave, in a municipal cemetery, recently I noticed that there was a mark at the top of the gravestone that I don't know the meaning of.

The stone is to Barbara who died in 1908 and her husband George who died in 1919 so I assume it dates from 1908.

I know that one can "read" some of the traditional signs on stones so wonder if anyone knows what this one signifies.

It looks like the letter N with a vertical line through it - see attachment.

Does anyone know what this signifies?

Thanks

What's the inscription immediately below it? I seem to remember a query a few years back where the 'In' of 'In Remembrance' had been inscribed at the top in a similar kind of way.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I think Arthurk has cracked it! Thanks.

Below it reads:

Loving Memory
        of
    Barbara

So the In at the top balances out the rest of the inscription.

Thanks for your thoughts too Kiltpin.

Happy to help  :)

And as this indicates that 'In' was sometimes inscribed like that, it's nice to know that my memory still works; either that, or I have the gift of premonition.  8)

That sounds better than my idea!
