Hi MJB,
Unfortunately census returns in Australia are VERY limited indeed so I'm afraid nobody will be able to help you with your census request. Here is a good summary of census information for Australia:
http://www.jaunay.com/auscensus.htmlI can't seem to find any mention of the name CANNAM in connexion with Shepparton on the Web.
At a site of war graves in Lae, PNG at:
http://www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries/war/lae_c.htmI found the following:
"CANNAM, Warrant Officer Class II, DUNCAN WILLIAM INKERSOLE, VX70522. A.I.F. 2/7 Indep. Coy. Australian Infantry. 27th February 1943. Age 35. Son of William Middleton Cannam and Lilian Edith Cannam; husband of Margaret Isobel Cannam, of East Malvern, Victoria. H. B. 12."
The World War 2 Nominal Roll at:
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/indicates that Duncan was born 31 Aug 1907, and enlisted in the Army at Newstead (a country town).
Wm Middleton CANNAM (parents Cannam Chas Chrsr and Mary INKERSOLE) died aged 73, at RICH (presumably Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne) in 1935 #912
William and Lilian's son Duncan William died in WW2 as mentioned above.
William's widow, Lilian Edith CANNAM (parents Duncan Wm and Mary Grace MCKEAND) died aged 80, at AUBURN (a suburb of Melbourne) in 1949, #288
William and Lilian's daughter Muriel Elizabeth ARNOLD (parents Cannam William and Lilian Edith DUNCAN) died aged 66, at ASHB (possibly Ashburton a suburb of Melbourne) in 1971 #16855
William and Lilian's daughter Mavis Christabel CANNAM (parents William and Lilian DUNCAN) died aged 71, at SURR (possibly Surrey Hills, a suburb of Melbourne) in 1973 #24926
