WW1? Uniform and Matching up Records
« on: Thursday 09 June 22 18:13 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I found this photo in a box belonging to the Richards (Llangeitho) and Williams (Aberaeron/ Aberarth) families.  Sadly most do not have names on and I would love to identify them.  My guess is a WW1 uniform with a medical connection (from the cross).  I have been looking up the names of relatives of the right ages and I found the record of Timothy Richards in the National Archives in the Royal Medical Corps,  but the medal cards don't seem to have addresses.  I would welcome generally any tips and also advice on how to connect medal cards and other military records to addresses if possible in order to be surer if I have made the right connections.
Thanks in advance, Izzie

Definitely RAMC.
With the absence of a service record the only route is
the Absent Voters list for where he was living at the time.
Not all survive.
I notice he had the MM Gazetted in Feb. 1919.
It states he was in the 130th. Field Ambulance (Mountain Ash)
38th. (Welsh) Div.
Somewhere in amongst this lot.

The National Library at Aberystwyth have Absent Voters for many of the Welsh Constituencies but sadly not for Cardiganshire/Montgomeryshire/Radnorshire. If you have any names/addresses in any of the Northern shires then ask away as I have copies. Also have some of the Southern constituencies.

Regarding 41840 Timothy Richards. As Jim points out he is a MM recipient and the LG entry shows his next of kin as being from Mountain Ash which, as you'll know, is further south than Cardiganshire. Can you put your man to that area?

Have a look at this website for the 130th FA, RAMC and in particular at the photo from their time at Prestatyn in early 1915 and which shows 48180 Richards as back row 3rd from left.

Many thanks for the information. The person in my photograph looks a lot slimmer than the Timothy Richards in the 130th and so that with the mountain ash location makes me think he’s probably someone else. Any tips on next course of action please?

I had a quick look at the 1911 census last night and there is a Timothy Richards of military age at Mountain Ash as well as one which presumably yours at Llangeitho (address of Tyndolau mistranscribed as Tyndalan on Ancestry)

If you haven't tried it before here's the welsh newspapers online. Some imaginative searching on there might provide you a way forward  (Aberaeron was Aberayron in that era?)

Are there any photographer details on the photo?

Do you have access to Ancestry or FindMyPast

Just to clarify Mountain Ash is the Depot of the 130th. not the place of his next of kin.

I can't comment on whether Mountain Ash was a depot for 130th FA, RAMC but in the context of the London Gazette entries the placename provided in brackets denotes the home address/area of the next of kin (and highly likely to be the man's home address/area) Same as applies to the placename provided in the casualty lists.

Many thanks. I will have a look at the newspapers and yes can access ancestry. Would there be particular records you recommend? I looked at the Llangeitho WW1 memorial and there are two people from Tyndolau. D Rowlands who looks to be the right age but is Devons Regt and should I be looking for one which is RMAC? And C Agate but he looks to be older.
