Bernard Coyle's Pub
« on: Tuesday 14 June 22 09:33 BST (UK) »
In the 1911 census there is a Bernard Coyle with his wife Kate (nee Gavin)  along with there children living in O'Connell street Athlone South, Westmeath in the Parish of St Peters,  his  occupation is Victualler so I am thinking he was a pub landlord. My question is how could I find out where the pub was and could it possibly be still standing ?

Any ideas would be very welcome

The house and buildings return describes the premises as a butcher's shop.

There's a court report in the Roscommon Messenger of 12 August 1905 concerning a Bernard Coyle, victualler, who had a contract to supply meat to the Athlone workhouse.

So he was a victualler in the sense of "a person providing or selling food or other provisions" but not a licensed victualler.

Thanks very much for your reply, the story I was told was that in fact the Fiddlers Pub in O'Connell street was where the Coyle's originated so I was right to dis believe the story, thanks again Shaun.

In 1901 Bernard is a victualler at house 11 in O’Connell Street

At house no 10, there is Mary Coyle, a Publican
