Ann Day b1797-1801- Bower Chalke
« on: Tuesday 21 June 22 12:10 BST (UK) »
I am looking into the life of an Ann Day (LCRC-CDB) bc 1797-1801 in Bower Chalke, Wiltshire on Familysearch.

Currently she is shown as a daughter of Sarah Day (LCMG-MSV) 1790-1870 which is most probably incorrect if Sarah's birth date of 1790 is accurate, as she would have given birth at around 11 years of age. I know in these times under English Law girls needed to be 12 years of age to marry but only 10 years of age for sexual intercourse.  The man Sarah married in 1809, Thomas Golding/Goulding would have been around 23yo and she 19 years.

Not sure if it can be proved that Ann is Sarah's daughter or in fact her youngest sibling born to Sarah's mother, Jane Lawes (LCMG-MC9)?

If anyone can help throw some light on this I would be immensely grateful.

Thanks in advance,
Frank

You say “she is shown as the daughter of Sarah Day”. Shown where??  If you found that info on somebody else's family tree you need to proceed with caution.

Who did Ann Day marry - when & where?  What census have you found her on to check her birthyear?

Have you checked www.familysearch.org for baptisms?

What do the various letters in brackets mean?

Golding/Goulding or Golden?  2 different people have notified a correction of surname on the 1851 census to Golden

By Googling

Ann Day Bower Chalke Wiltshire

The Wiltshire OPC-org.uk have translated the

Bowerchalke Baptisms - 1799-1845

and another website by Wiltshire OPC

has

Bowerchalke Marriages 1701-1845 - The Wiltshire OPC

These are both on spreadsheets.

---

On the baptism website, on the 25 March 1804, Nanny (female) DAY was christened - mother: Sarah, baseborn, privately baptised.

Thanks for your reply.

All of the information I have is that which is available on the public website www.familysearch.org.

All family trees on that site are defaulted to public view where anyone can edit and/or amend the details. Each person added to the site is automatically given a unique identification alpha-numeric code. The various letters/numbers I included in brackets are the codes for the people I am looking into.  The links you provided in your second email include the alpha-numeric codes at the end of the link.

That said, your links to the sources of evidence for Sarah Day's baptism and marriage were appreciated.

However, where I need help is trying to establish sources of evidence pre-1826 which confirm the names of Ann's parent(s). Whilst typing this, Rootschat member Capetown's post popped up and the information looks like a possible explanation.  If it's the same Sarah Day who had a baseborn female child in 1804 that could be the answer. Sarah would only have been around 14yo but not impossible and that may explain the lack of official baptismal record.

I will see if I can access the records Capetown mentions.

Knarf45,

The original baptism register for Bower Chalke is viewable on Ancy... if you have a sub. and in looking there is a baptism for;

Sarah Day d/o Wm & Jane bapt.. 21-3-1790 ( the entry is at the very bottom of the page)
and;

Nanny baseborn of Sarah Day privately baptised  25-3-1804

also
Jane Day d/o James & Jane bapt. 29-10-1786

I looked  within the years 1788 - 1805 only and whilst there are  more entries of children being bapt. to Wm. & Jane, I saw no other "Sarah Day" entries

The Wiltshire OPC have also transcribed

Broad Chalke - Bastardly Examinations 1787-1849

Sourced from Salisbury  & Amesbury County Division Petty Sessions
Justices’ Minute Books 2788-1836

It’s 2 pages long, but no sign of DAY.
