Register of Marriage Neilston
« on: Friday 24 June 22 16:59 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon

I have found the marriage banns of an ancestor, Reuben Brotherton, who married in 1847 in the Neilston district on the Scottish Genealogy page but not the marriage itself. Where would I find this, please?

Thanks.

Kind regards
Amanda

Hi

Thank you but the banns doesn't record parents, if they were in fact recorded in Scotland at that time.

Statutory registration of marriage began in 1855 in Scotland. Prior to that, any record will be in the parish registers. Not all marriages were recorded and not every register has survived.

What is found in a parish marriage register varies considerably.

Most commonly it is the contract, i.e. when the couple went to the session clerk and said they intended to marry. Sometimes only their names are recorded, sometimes there is extra information.

In earlier times "pledges" were recorded. This was a sum of money paid by each member of the couple. If the marriage went ahead within forty days with no scandal attached to it, the pledges were returned.

Sometimes the register records the fact that banns were read, occasionally giving the date of each reading.

Sometimes the register adds the fact that the couple did marry and gives the date of the ceremony.

15th May 1847 was a Saturday.

Thank you.

I have found family of Reuben including his marriages and death certificate. I was hoping for further information on his parents from a marriage certificate to corroborate the information on his death certificate.

You won't, because there is no separate record of marriages before the start of civil registration in 1855.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Generally they were not.
