Glossop Tramp
« on: Saturday 25 June 22 14:06 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have posted previously regarding an ancestor, Caleb Brotherton, whose last known whereabouts was reported in the Glossop-dale Chronicle and North Derbyshire Reporter in 1875 as a tramp found sleeping on a haystack.

As I have found no other record of him I would like to know if there are any other accessible parish records that may record what may have happened to him next. As a tramp I can only assume that any other record may be held in local records for poor relief. There is no other mention of him in the local paper after this time. I know that he previously served time in prison as well as in the army. I just don't know his final whereabouts.

Thank you in advance of any assistance given.

Kind regards
Amanda

Amanda -- (although naturally I love the name Pendlewitch!) --- have you tried this website for mentions of your Derbyshire ancestors? It is for Derbyshire records.

My sincere apologies if you have.

Caleb, also a son of Reuben married Elizabeth Burgess in 1867 and he is the Publican in Manchester, I think.

Looks as though he was born c 1845 but his age is mistranscribed in 1871..
Presumably not the one found in Glossop.

The Reuben that I found on the 1841 was b.c. 1819 (age 21) so would fit with this posting by Amanda*

Yes, I was just discounting the younger Publican as he is transcribed as 76 yrs in 1871 on one site.

Quite a few C B entries on the 1851. I've got to go  now so can't check.
