Mary Jane Farrell b 6.5.1850 Melbourne.  Parents Bridget & James

Remarried to William J Davis in 1896 & died aged 75 in Sydney on 6.7.1925

If Archibald only died in 1903 - did they divorce??  If not - 1896 marriage was bigamous unless she had him declared dead after 7yrs in desertion??

Well, I haven't found an actual record of divorce, but I did come across two newspaper snippets relating to this.

The first in 1890 about a warrant at Captain's Flat (the right area) for Archibald's arrest for desserting his wife Jane with no means of supporting herself.

The second was a notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, in 1895, of Jane's petition to divorce Archibald on the grounds of desertion, so I believe she did divorce him.

But I hadn't found a remarriage, so that's interesting!

William was a 28 yr old miner - She knocked quite a few years off her age!!  She was 46 when they married.  Wonder how she explained her children's ages??

Very interesting!!
I can't imagine looking 8 years younger after having 12 children!! She was only 16 when she married Archibald if this is all correct, but after 17 years of childbearing, I would think she'd definitely look 46, if not older.

I think it could be her though, because one of her children, her firstborn son, carries Tye as a middle name - Silvester Tye b.1870.

I'm not familiar with the divorce customs of the day though, and whether it was customary to be classed as unmarried, and go back to one's maiden name, rather than be known as divorced and marry with the previous married name...

I have a transcript of their marriage on 11 Dec 1866 at St Gregory's, Queanbeyan, NSW.

Neither party has Father, Mother, Place of Birth, Age or Father's occupation listed in the transcript, unfortunately.

You can obtain details from the marriage register directly from St Gregory's which should have the missing parental information.  There is a fairly hefty fee.

I believe the mother's name is probably Bridget TIGHE

There is the marriage of James FARRELL to Bridget TEIGH in Victoria in 1849.
On the birth regos of children her name is spelled most often as TIGHE and also as TAIGE

A Bridget TIGHE arrived in NSW in 1848 onboard “Lady Kennaway”. She was a 16 yr old housemaid from Mayo.
