Have found baptism and burial records for a Martha Newell in 1840, illegitimate, mother Sarah Newell (Servant), died aged 4 months. Born and died in Union Workhouse! Church Stretton in Shropshire.
BUT
I have an ancestor Martha Ann Selina Smith nee Newell - she was buried in Warwick in 1879 aged 40 - she had married John Smith - marriage registered West Bromwich, Shropshire in 1870 in Sep 1/4 ref 6b 783.
This Martha and her husband and family are well documented.
NOW
This Martha found in 1841 Census aged 4 - inmate in Atcham Union Workhouse. Born Shropshire.
In 1851 Census Martha aged 14, Servant, at Somers Town, St Pancreas Middlesex, born Shropshire.
In 1861 Census Martha now aged 23, Servant, in house of James Horsfall at Aston in Warwickshire. Martha born Church Stretton, Shropshire.

Pretty sure I have my Martha Newell in these three Census.

Have not been able to find birth/baptism for this Martha Newell.

Any help appreciated

Thank you ColC
- seems to fit - especially why Martha in 1841 was Inmate in Workhouse!
