Joseph Haglehurst - where buried?
« on: Sunday 03 July 22 00:22 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I have been looking into Joseph Haglehurst - a midshipman from the ship Huntess in 1863. Joseph was the son of the Rev. Haglehurst of Chesterfiele, England. Joseph died of pneumonia while aboard the Huntress (as the ship was anchored in Lyttelton Harbour) May 18th, 1863.

I can not find a burial for him in Lyttelton. I know that one or two seamen were buried on Quarantine Island at Port Charmers - So what I am thinking is that maybe Joseph was buried at Camp Bay?

Please see attached what I have found on Ancestry. I would be very in any thoughts.

The folio number from the old NZ Indexes on Ancestry indicates the death was registered in Lyttelton.

Hi Ash,

Is this your comment at the bottom of the webpage regarding his possible burial at Camp Bay?

http://greatgrandmaswickerbasket.blogspot.com/2014/02/camp-bay-cemetery-records-banks.html

Have you approached Christchurch (or Lyttelton) City Council to see if they hold any off-line records?

Perhaps ignore my suggestion above. The Great Grandma's Wicker Basket website makes it clear that those options were a dead end for the webpage's author.

Nothing on Archives New Zealand's search page ('haylehurst', 'hagelhurst' or 'hazelhurst').

I was hoping to find a coroner's report or letter from some authority discussing his death. There are some letters dating to 1863 re the HUNTRESS and held at Archives New Zealand's Christchurch office but the descriptions aren't detailed enough.
