Bartholomew Joseph O’Flaherty born
« on: Monday 04 July 22 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi
I’m looking for Bartholomew’s mother.

What I know so far …

He was born 11 Jan 1892 in Minster Kent. Confirmed on GRO as Sheppey MMN Jessup.

He served in the Royal Navy from a young age. I’ve found several of his service records on ancestry.

Married to Florence Gertrude Allen in 1937 Medway reg district. Found them both on 1939 reg. in Chatham.

What I’m puzzled about it Bartholomew's mother.

MMN is Jessup. On GRO I found a brother Cecil with same MMN born 1886 Sheppey.

So … I checked out Cecil on the censuses.

1891
He is living in Minster, Kent, with father Bartholomew O’Flaherty b1843 Galway, Ireland who is a labourer in HM dockyard. Mother Ada born c1858 Plymouth, Devon. Sister Ella 1894 and brother Walter 1899.

1901
Cecil is at the District Royal Hospital School in Greenwich. Surname transcribed as Feahaity.

Meanwhile in 1901, Bartholomew is living with Ada O’Flaherty b1862 Plymouth, and Dominic O’Flaherty aged 21 months.

(I’m having trouble with the O’Flaherty bit on GRO. I don’t know if it’s my iPad playing up but it doesn’t like the apostrophe.)

I can’t find a marriage for an Ada Jessup to a Bartholomew O’Flaherty. I can find one for an Ada Catherine Evans in 1881 at St Martin in the Fields. Bartholomew was a widower and a seaman.

In 1939, Ada is a widow and is living with Dominic and his wife in Tickenham. Dob 30 Nov 1861. Says she’s incapacitated.

So I started looking for an Ada Jessup. Found one living in worth in 1871, born 1861 Plymouth, with parents George and Jessie.

Can anyone help untangle this, so that I can get back beyond Bartholomew?

Many thanks 😊

Excellent find Heywood 👏👏

1871 for Kent has Ada Jessup aged 10 with George & Jessie Jessup.

Looks like she was illegit but took her stepfathers surname (unless Jessie was a widow)

1899 birth of Dominic James O'Flaherty has a blank where mother's maiden name would have been.  Could this Ada be a sister to Bartholomew's father?

Pretty sure Ada Evans aka Jessup is Batholomew Joseph's mother

Dominic is listed as Bartholomew and Ada's son in 1911 and he gives Ada as his next of kin when he enlists in 1917

I think this is Ella's birth registration

Walter also has mmn Evans

Not sure where you got a blank for Dom's mmn - I think this is him on GRO index.

Apologies

Evelyn is a different child (I got confused by Ella's dob sometimes being given as 1882)

Evelyn dies young
