Scarborough Dean Road Cemetery.
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 13:21 BST (UK) »
Two quite well-known people (they each have an entry in Wikipedia) were buried in Dean Road cemetery in plot C 33-9, but the site is now just an unmarked grassy area.

They were Edward Bury F.R.S., an engineer (1794-1858), and his wife, Priscilla Susan Bury, a botanical illustrator (1799-1872).

There must have been a monument on their grave, but enquiries to the Friends of Dean Park have revealed nothing.

So can anyone suggest what may have happened to it?  Or anything about it? Please.

Harry.

Not necessarily.  Have you any confirmation that the grave did have a memorial or are you assuming because they were notable that it must have had one?

Health & Safety regs have resulted in many older monuments being removed as unsafe.  The cemetary contacts the last known relative (if known) but if there is no response - it will depend on the practice in that particular cemetary as to what happens next

Many thanks, Carole.

You are right of course. I simply assumed there would have been a monument because they were both well-known, with quite wealthy sons.
