Location near Burlescombe, Devon
« on: Saturday 09 July 22 11:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

In the 1841 Census The Strong Family's address is given as :

Part Lake Bridge Bedbrook, Burlescombe, Wellington, Devon, England

I see that there is a Bedbrook Barn, with post code: EX16 7LJ

I assume this would be close to the address above, which I guess was part of Bedbrook Farm in those days.

Following the lane, to the south of Burlescombe, to the post code above, the road appears to cross a small brook, but no sign of a lake.

Does anyone, with local knowledge, have a clearer idea of the site in the 1841 Census, please?

Thanks,

Gordon

Thanks,

It is in the same location as I got from the post code.

I suspect that a lake could have been formed from the excavation of gravel.

Thanks for the map you downloaded - most interesting.

Gordon

Velhay Farm is nearby on the 1841 census:

You can see Bedbrook is to the west of Velhay which adds weight to this being the correct Bedbrook.

On the 1841 census there are a few families living at Bedbrook Cottage in either side of your Strong family.

I am not convinced that their address is “Part Lake Bridge”. I will have a closer look.

I can also see Pound Farm nearby on the map and its residents are on the 1841 Census, as well.

Looking at the original document for the 1841 Census, I am not totally convinced that Findmypast has transcribed the address of the Strong Household correctly.

I agree. The middle word looks like “Lake” but I am not sure about “Part” or “Bridge”. I viewed it on Ancestry and didn’t think it was clear, but it doesn’t sound like it is any better on FindMyPast.

You might get some more ideas of the address if a couple more people had a look and see what they think.  :)
