Samuel Arnott
« on: Tuesday 12 July 22 14:07 BST (UK) »
I am doing research into Samuel Arnott (1852-1930) and understand that he was gifted a house Loveland, Castle Douglas Road Dumfries by Mrs Hope-Henderson of Afgaty near Doune. Although I have been told this was the case I have no substantive proof. If anyone can assist me with documentary proof it would be greatly appreciated

Are you sure it's Afgaty rather than  Argaty?
https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NN7303

According to the 1920 Valuation Roll at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk the proprietor of Argaty was Mrs Annie Hope Henderson. In 1925 the proprietor was Mrs M M Bowser and in 1915 it was George Home Munro Home.

Annie Hope Henderson, aged 68, died in 1934 in the parish of Kincardine, Perthshire.

He can't have been left it in her will because she died after him.

Confirmation of the testament of Annie Hope Henderson or Duncan or Henderson of Argaty, who died on 17 April 1934 at The Coldoch, Blair Drummond, Perthshire, was granted at Glasgow to Lesley Jane Hope Henderson or Snadden and Maysie Murray Henderson or Bowser.

Lesley J Hope Henderson married William McNair Snadden in Glasgow in 1919.

Maysie Murray Henderson married David Charles Bower in Glasgow in 1922.

According to an article in the Stirling Observer Argaty had been in the hands of the Home Monro family since 1498. It was sold in 1916 to Thomas Henderson, merchant, Glasgow.

Reference here to the gifting of the property by Mrs Hope Anderson to Samuel Arnott http://www.dgnhas.org.uk/tdgnhas/3084.pdf - page 178:

...In 1921, they moved to Fernlea in Newall Terrace, Dumfries, and
finally in 1928 to Loveland, a bungalow on the Castle Douglas Road, given to him by Mrs HopeHenderson of Argaty near Doune...

Title deeds of the property might throw more light on this? There may also be some reference to this all in Mrs Hope Anderson's will perhaps.

Also wondering whether maybe the gift was that of land and Samuel Arnott built the house/bungalow Loveland? DonM made a reference to the possibility of this in the older post.

There will be a sasine recording the transfer of ownership, with details of what was transferred, i.e. land with or without a building.

You need to consult the Dumfries-shire Abridgments of Sasines for 1928 and preceding years until you find the relevant entry. The Abridgments are available to consult in the Historical Search Room in General Register House in Edinburgh, but there may be copies in libraries or archives in Dumfries-shire.
