Ah so possibly Syria at least POW is unlikely
Poor chap he was very traumatised after the war not sure how much was due to his service and how much from this awful event :
The girl mentioned in the letter and he planned to marry as soon as he returned home but the day  he landed on GB her house was bombed, killing her.
