Is it possible to find which unit a man served in in WW2 given I only have the following very sparse information?

Name Norman PRATT
born 23 Sep 1919 Birmingham son of John George Pratt and Maria nee Hall
service number 1884211   from a message home
Served in the desert  written on  the back of one photo has desert rat 1942 it the photo shows him in an open neck shirt
1939 he was a plumber

There  is very little else ...one cousin thinks he served with the RASC and an elderly sister thought he may have been a POW in Italy  but dates and other familymembers don't seem to agree with that!

My grandfather was in the RASC in ww2 . He served in Egypt and sicily and Italy.  Are these what are referred to as "desert rats"

He was serving with 138 Mechanical Equipment Company, Royal Engineers. They operated diggers and bulldozers.

Thank you ShaunJ. I assume as a driver he'd have taken the plant to where it was required? .Is there anyway of finding out where he was and is it possible he was ever a POW of the Italians?

He's not on the War Office PoW lists

In terms of Middle East Forces serving in WW2 Libya should also be included in the list  :)

Ah so possibly Syria at least POW is unlikely
Poor chap he was very traumatised after the war not sure how much was due to his service and how much from this awful event :
The girl mentioned in the letter and he planned to marry as soon as he returned home but the day  he landed on GB her house was bombed, killing her.
