4th gt-grandmother
« on: Monday 18 July 22 17:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

4th gt-grandfather, William Christie married 'May' Mitchell on 12th Dec 1793 at St. Vigean's, Angus.

In the baptism records of all their children, and on her 1835 death record, 'May' is 'Marjory'.

The age on her death record is 68, which would indicate birth around 1767.

I cannot find a suitable candidate in Angus.

Any assistance would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Gordon

Although they married in Angus - she may have been born elsewhere. SP has 2 Marjory Mitchell births 1768 & 1769 - Speymouth & Ceres

The names Marjory and May are interchangeable.

It is quite likely that her baptism record, if it ever existed, has not survived.

What were the names of her children? Have you looked at their baptism records to see if there are any clues, for example names of witnesses?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Is this Williams baptism?  If so - was he previously married as he would have been 40 in 1793

I have seen this on some Ancestry trees, but I think that is rather early for the 1793 marriage.

There was a William Christie baptised at Carmyllie in 1765, with parents Robert Christie and Jean Reid. I think this is more likely, as William's 2nd son was named Robert.

Thanks for mentioning it.

I wondered if 'May' was interchangeable with 'Marjory'. I have only come across it used for 'Mary' before.

Thanks for suggesting that.

I notice that one of the daughters was 'Marjory', so I think that was the mother's name. 'May' only gets a single mention on the marriage record.

Forfarian is correct, I have seen instances of the same woman being called May and Marjory. Even Marjory May! Marjory is also sometimes made into Maisie.

If they followed the naming convention you'd expect William's parents to be William and Marjory and Marjory's to be Robert and Jane.

But perhaps the followed the variant, making Marjory's parents William and Marjory and William's Robert and Jane.

Or perhaps both their mothers were called Jane/Jean so they named the second daughter after her mother.

Or perhaps they didn't follow either convention.
