On the  Lott alias Hopkin girls, we have evidence Ruth went through a chapel ceremony in 1815 and a church one in 1822. I think the latter was the only one legally recognised at that time?

Thanks, all very useful an interesting stuff. Here is Google’s attempt to translate entry 9

“The Wesleyan golden grain or, a treasury of divine and wholesome knowledge - Vol. 35 No. 5 - May 1843

MEMORY - About the life and death of Mrs Lott, Goetrewen, Abertawy Circuit
In the year 1815 she united in a matrimonial union with Thomas Braithwaite William Lott, Esq., Goetrewen. Four children were born to her, one son and three daughters; but in the year 1819, the son and one of the daughters were buried on the same day, and died on the same day.”

Is there a link for the original article?

Yes - Welsh Journals  https://journals.library.wales

If you search for "Mrs Lott" (include the "  " as part of key) it returns the commemoration in 2 parts. Begun in the May 1 issue of the "Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd" and completed in the June 1 issue.

As there was a deceleration by Thomas Lott I am presuming there was some associated claim of money/inheritance. I am also guessing a Braithwaite William or William Braithwaite features in his ancestry somewhere.

In the 1827 Will of William Hopkins (of Trosserch Llangenech and collector of customs) are mentioned daughter Anne Sophia (who is under 16 years of age), son William (who is under 21 years of age) and wife Sage.

For Thomas Lott to be his grandson I am guessing Anne Sophia marries a Lott, or Sage remarries a Lott or William has an illegitimate son and hence the claim?

Thomas Braithwaite William Lott is also mentioned as the grandson of a Thomas Lott who died in 1808

https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/search/archives/9ecfd4ba-c483-376e-84c8-250ad7a58d87?component=0db17682-e31d-3a68-b362-bd38954c94ca&terms=Thomas%20william%20Braithwaite%20lott

The Will is from 1808, though I can find it on ancestry. The summary is:

Copy Will of Thomas Lott, including bequests to his sister Ann Hooper, widow, nephew William Hooper esq., son in law Edward Martin, daughter in law Mary Lott, widow of William Lott, his friend William Bevan, cousin David Lott, cousin William Jenkins, daughter Martha Martin, wife Margaret Lott, grandchildren Thomas Lott Martin, Edward Martin, Martha Martin, Suzannah Martin, Ann Martin, William Martin, Jane Martin and Joseph Martin, Thomas Braithwaite William Lott and Jane Maria Lott, and premises called Palleg Colliery and Y Gwaun Clawdd colliery in Ystradfellte parish. Trustees named as William Bevan and William Grove. dated 6 Feb. 1808

Where the children of the 2 grandfathers of Thomas Lott (Thomas Lott 1808 and William Hopkins 1827) merge to produce Thomas Braithwaite William Lott remains to be resolved

Apologies, missed this from earlier

‘Thomas's Parents were WILLIAM/MARY Marriage is on FreeREG 06 Feb 1797;
William LOTT/Mary HOPKIN”

Interestingly Thomas was baptised in Llansamlet with a birth date given as 18 Feb 1799.

The Will of Thomas Lott 1808 mentions a daughter in law Mary Lott widow of William Lott. So William Lott must be the son of Thomas Lott who dies sometime between 1799-1808. Mary Hopkin is the presumed daughter of William Hopkin of Trosserch, although no mention of her is made in his 1827 Will, maybe because she dies before 1827?

There is a burial of a Mrs. Mary Lott, Widow age 40 of Goitrewen, Llannon in Llangennech records on 17 Feb 1814, so presumably Mary Lott nee Hopkin(s)

Not as straightforward as I thought. I have found the burial entry of William Hopkin in Llangennech records in 1827. He is age 52 so born around 1775 . Mrs Mary Lott (presumed nee Hopkin) who died in 1814 was 40 and there was born around 1774, so she can’t be a daughter of William 1775-1827 but could be a sister.

Getting confused now!
