Violet Hoby + her connections to Jewish Bernstein family
« on: Tuesday 19 July 22 22:37 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am struggling to find information about Violet Hoby (born abt 1881). She is the mother of Frederick Isidore Bunyon (1908) and 5 other children with John George Frederick Bunyon. I found this out through her children's birth and baptism records. All lived in London/Middlesex and didn't move around much.

However I can't find any record of Violet's birth or any records from her childhood. I think her parents are William Thomas Hoby (1831-1907) and Rosina Berry, but she is on no census' with them.

Violet had a sister called Elizabeth Hoby who married Isidore Julius Bernstein, a Jewish man. This is what confuses me as Violet has given her children names like Isidore and Maurice which are from the Jewish Bernstein family. It seems weird for her to name her children after her brother in laws family, and also why is the no record of Violet existing before her marriage to John Bunyon.

Any information about Violet Hoby or the family is appreciated, thank you :)

Can you please give references to the 1891 and 1901 censuses for William and Rosina.

Have you ruled out Jane HOBY MMN BERRY. B 11 May 1880
Father William, a Coach Smith

Compares with a dob birth given for Violet of 5 Mar 1880

She might have thought Jane was too plain a name?

I know William Hoby was a coach smith, so Jane was most likely one of their daughters but again, I can't find Jane Hoby in any census', or any other records for a Jane Hoby. But it does make sense that this could be Violet.

As for the 1891 and 1901 censuses...

1891 (Sussex Street, St George Hanover Square, London):
William Hoby , 1841 , Living on own means
Rose Hoby, 1827, Living on own means

I can't find a 1901 census for William, Rose would have been dead by then as I think she died in 1892
I have an 1861 census for them but not sure if it will help:

1861 (5, Marylebone court, London/Middlesex):
William Hoby , 1831 , Coach Smith
Roseanna Hoby , 1827 , Coach Smith Wife
William , 1853 , Scholar SON
Roseanna, 1858 , Scholar DAUGHTER
David , 1860 , -------- SON

It looks like you have the correct family. There is a very long newspaper article about the family, too long to copy, but she had a sister Mary Univer,  who was married to an American. Mary died in 1893. The father was William Hoby, coachman, residing at lidlington place, Oakley square. There was an inquest and charges were laid. Violet was mentioned in the article, along with other family members, a sister Mary and a sister Rosina.

So we have An Opera singer, and I see Elizabeth who married Isidore Bernstein (eventually  :)) was an actress.  In my experience you are lucky only Jane/Violet appears to have changed her name!  (Assuming they are the same obviously 🙄)

Violet had a sister called Elizabeth Hoby who married Isidore Julius Bernstein

I imagine you had noticed he was one of the witnesses at her wedding.  so perhaps Violet was living with them for sometime.

Not that that has helped me find her in 1891!
