I know a bit more about William Hoby's death if this helps:
He killed himself on the steps of the London stock exchange in protest about his business as a self employed carriage builder and driver (and wheelwright) as it had gone bankrupt.
As for Violet/Jane living with the Bernstein's I think this could be very possible and maybe explain why Violet/Jane gave her children names from the Bernstein family. I'm not sure how happy the Hoby's were about Elizabeth (protestant) marrying a Jewish man and may have abandoned her in some ways. Maybe Violet/Jane was angry at her family for doing this and went with her sister and supported them, then grew closer with the Bernsteins. Still a bit strange for her to give her children family names of her brother in law, but can't think of anything else.
