Ancestor in an asylum
« on: Wednesday 20 July 22 15:44 BST (UK) »
I have recently learnt of an ancestor of mine being placed in an asylum about 1910 and at the time she was living in the Westminster area. I do not know which asylum she was placed, but would have to start with one in the Westminster area. I do not know how long she was in the asylum and I do not know at this stage when she died. I have searched for her death of various sites, but to date no luck.

Is there any site which I could contact to try to find which asylum she was in. I would be grateful for any information.

Regards

Martin

This link to the National Archive gives you an overview of what is available.

You might be able to find your ancestors admission details on Ancestry, if it's before 1912.

If you share your ancestors name we might be able to help you further.

She should be on the 1911 census. My relative is listed. In London alone, there were many, so a name would help Rootschatters to find her.

Thank you for your replies.

I have been up hill and down dale on the 1911 census and no sign of her anywhere. I have searched using less and more of her details with no success.

My ancestor was born Sarah Harris, about 1861 at Little Hadham, Hertfordshire. She married George Hammond Conradi, so could be in as either Harris or Conradi. I have searched on both.

I would be very grateful to anyone who searches and gets a result. Good luck.

Have you tried just searching on her initials, as some institutions did not put the full name on the census

Death: Oct-Dec 1924 . George H Conradi . 66 . Fulham . 1a . 340

This seems to be him in 1901 and 1911.
1901 Census
George Conradi . 1861 . Dover, Kent
Spouse: Sarah Conradi . Children: Eva Conradi, Amy Conradi

Same person but with a different wife.
1911 Census . Chelsea, London
George H Conrady . 1861 . Dover, Kent
Spouse: Mary Ann Conrady . Children: Amy Ethel Conrady, Claude Conrady, Prince Alfred Gurney, May Rose Gurney
Either Sarah had died, or there was a divorce.

I cannot find a death for Sarah Conradi.

Possible Burial: Find A Grave Index
Sarah Ann Harris . 1906 . Pinner, London . Birth 1861

Possible Death: Jan-Mar 1905 . Sarah Jane Harris . 42 . Whitechapel . 1c . 187

Marriage: Oct-Dec 1910 . George H Conrady . Mary A Gurney
St Geo . H.Sq. . 1a . 1063

Added:
St. Georges Hanover Square is also the name of a large workhouse. The Archive service that covers that area may have records.

There is an S Harris in an asylum in 1911, but the record isn't great.

Registration District Number:   139
Sub-registration District:   St Albans
ED, institution, or vessel:   20-21
Piece:   7686

It says the person is married, that they were born in 1864, and their birth location is 'not known'.

Hertfordshire County Asylum, Hill End, St Albans
