Have you tried looking at newspapers to see if there is any mention of their deaths it might give you details of any funeral arrangements

I did search under William Eglin Clayton on the British Newspaper Archives, and the only result I got was that he sold a London pub to another man.  The Islington Gazette 8th January 1877 shows him selling the Hanley Arms, Hornsey Road, to William Freeman Thomas.

Strange that a wealthy family wouldn't announce his obituary in the local newspaper.  He actually died in Westmorland, though he lived in Islington and seems to have been buried in Islington, but either way it should have been in the British Newspaper Archives from some UK newspaper.

The BNA isn’t exhaustive - it’s quite possible that the relevant newspaper isn’t yet scanned in the archive.

Ok thanks.  I suppose the local Islington newspapers are the best place to look, such as the Islington Gazette?  Maybe the local history library has them?  Maybe not indexed, so it is a case of trawling through microfiches?

And as he actually died in Westmorland, maybe his obituary would be in their local newspaper in their local history library?

Thanks, I know where to look.  Most libraries have the Daily Telegraph archives.

I am wondering whether to make a trip...National Archives at Kew
I can't trace his widow after 1884.

As his estate was a reasonably valuable one, perhaps you could look in the Death Duty Registers?
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/death-duties-1796-1903/

In the hope there is some later info on Elizabeth Ann.
Unless someone on here can find her!
