Hi, Kay, thank you. Perhaps Thomas jnr thought the occupation of tanner sounded better than labourer. Or maybe Thomas snr WAS a tanner in 1875. I think it's Thomas snr who died in the Woodmancote Alms Houses, buried at Dursley St James on 2 January 1880, age 77. Assume too its his wife Elizabeth who died in the Alms Houses, buried 5 February 1878, age 69.  Regards, Anne

It is possible that his father was a labourer in a tanning works?   Certainly listed as a labourer in 1871

Hi, Kay, that's very likely. Most places would have had tanneries at that time. Not a pleasant place to work. Thanks again, Anne

Thank you so much for that. It's interesting that there are unusual places you can get extra information from. Anne

Hello again. Looking at the Dursley records again. Does anyone know if the Parish Registers are available for Dursley? The BT's images are on ancestry and on family search. But I am starting to wonder if the pages have been stitched together wrong... Basically on the one page are the following in this order. Burial 21 November 1749, Elizabeth wife of Richard Elliott. Marriage, 26 December 1749 Richard Elliott and Elizabeth Harvey. Marriage, 26 December 1749 Richard Elliott and Elizabeth Cornock. (Phillamore's reads 1749/50). These 2 marriages are a few lines apart on the BT's. Baptism, 11 May 1750, Thomas son of Richard and Elizabeth Elliott. I am finding the time frames hard to get my head around. Thank you if you can help.

Images of the Dursley parish registers are available on Ancestry. The dates almost agree with those you quote, the last is in January 1749/50. It is possible that they all refer to the same Richard. A widower with young children could be quite desperate. But as Thomas must have been conceived before November it would mean some very strange relationships.

There were lots of Elliotts in the area and at least one other Richard, with wife Hannah, baptised children in Dursley before and after 1749. So it's quite feasible that there two or three different Richards involved in those three records. Unless you can find a helpful will or similar it may be impossible to work out exactly what happened.

Thank you. Yes, it does look like more than one Richard. I'll keep hunting. Thanks again. Anne
