Brick Wall Thomas Doyle 1892 Clyde St, Glasgow
« on: Saturday 23 July 22 19:22 BST (UK) »
 Hi all,
First post on here, Been doing my family tree and have found my great grandfather was born illegitimate to his mother Susan McAllister of 4 Mckechnie St (Now Dornoch St) On court papers for child maintenance his father is named as a Thomas Doyle who's occupation is listed as a holeborer and residing at 50 Clyde St I'm assuming it's now Abercromby St which was round the corner from 4 Mckechnie St/Dornoch St)

Other than the court document I've nothing else to go on and looking at Scotlands People/Ancestry census records etc I can't find any other information that I can say that's the person I'm looking for any idea's pointers to locate him I can't find holeborer listed under any Victorian jobs so I'm assuming it either involved tunneling in mines/Glasgow underground or drilling metals etc

Newspapers show 50 Clyde street, Anderston was a shop over that period
In 1890 proprietor Robert Thomson, 1895 Marian Currie
November 1891 a Nicolas Murray of that address in a case against railway contractors James Young & Co.

Accident happened in May 1891 working in a tunnel at the west end connection of the new central railway.

So…if one assumes whoever had the shop let rooms, and the likelihood of  people working at the same workplace recommending it/sharing …  then the tunneller option for his occupation looks good.  Presumably not a bricklayer.

Susan McAllister showed as aged 18 in 1891 didn't she. Might help when looking for a Thomas Doyle within an age range.

I think this is the birth for that Thomas that you found:

Thomas Doyle
Birth 18 Feb 1873 Anderston, Glasgow
Parents Michael Doyle and Agnes Mcginty

By 1901, that same Thomas Doyle is married to Margaret Burns, and has a 2 yr old daughter, Lizzie.
He is still a rivet maker.

Added. As far as I can see, he is the only Thomas Doyle in Anderston. There are other possibilities in other districts of Glasgow.

If you google "rivet making" it does appear to involve boring a hole. :)
