Fire at Maternity Home
« on: Tuesday 26 July 22 21:21 BST (UK) »
In my research I have come across a newspaper article in the Dundee Courier, dated 11 May 1948.  It makes reference to a fire at Ayr Nursing Home maternity home.  Which is now South Lodge nursing home on Racecourse road.  According to the article it was a fatal fire but I have been unsuccessful in finding any other reference to the fire.  Does anyone else have any info on the fire?

? It says that two babies died as a result of an electric fire being left on and igniting an ironing board in the operating theatre where 5 babies were sleeping.

But you will have seen that.

Yes, that's right but I can only find that one reference to it.

There is also an article about the Inquiry in " The Scotsman" also on the 11 May 1948. ( This article gives the names and ages of the babies who died).

The principal newspaper for Ayr is / was the Ayrshire Post and secondly the Ayr Advertiser and the 2 nationals which should have carried the story are the Glasgow Herald and the Daily Record.  Ayr County news would also have appeared in the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald whose archives are available to search.
good luck, Ian
