Hello
James and Martha are on the 1851 census together .James born 1822 Cockermouth ,Hatter and in 1841 he is at home with his parents at St Helen St Brigham Cockermouth
John 46 shoemaker ,Elizabeth 44.
1851 same street James 29 hatter and Martha 22 both born Cockermouth. Daughter Elizabeth 1.
Eldest Elizabeth born Sep qtr 1846( burial 4.10.1846) ,then Elizabeth Dec qtr 1849 ,Sarah Sep 1855 and John Sep qtr 1858.
Christenings give extra children Esther Mary 7.11.1852 (buried same day) and John 15.1.1854
(buried 7th March 1854) .Sarah bapt 8th August 1855 and Elizabeth 16 Jan 1850.
James was on trail for burglary at the azzises 4 Aug 1846 and found not guilty of burglary and receiving stolen goods.
Given that Martha was 22 in 1851 and they married ,hopefully before their first child was born Sept/Oct 1846 ,they must have married 1844 to 1846 at a stretch but no sign of the event
I know you are wary of jumping to assumptions but given the James Askins you have is living on the same street in 1841/1851 ,is about the same age ,has the same job and is naming his children after his possible parents again and again I do think you are right and John and Elizabeth are his parents.
Will keep looking though
