Sydney Morning Herald  21 May 1940

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/17679910?

death notice Elizabeth DOERNER.........Mrs H WINTER.....

I think the WINTER-DOERNER, 1919, is correct.

I do not think the photo is a 1919 wedding.

Is it a wedding anniversary?.  Cake looks rather elaborate for an anniversary.

Oh, I see you added the anniversary suggestion too. Yes it is quite an elaborate cake.

I guess I'll never know for sure, but at least I can put names to the couple now.  :D

Could the cake have been borrowed for the photo? My husband and I returned from our honeymoon to be shown  a photo of my parents on their twentieth wedding anniversary with the borrowed top tier of our wedding cake We married the day before their anniversary.

That's an interesting idea Jebber. I've heard of the top tier of a wedding cake being used as a Christening cake for the first child, but not as an anniversary cake for the parents!

That's an interesting idea Jebber. I've heard of the top tier of a wedding cake being used as a Christening cake for the first child, but not as an anniversary cake for the parents!

The cake was only used for the photograph, it was then stored and used for a christening cake fourteen months later.  The top tiers of all the wedding cakes I have made were later used as christening cakes for the first chid. Usually with added coloured icing to match the sex of the baby.

Do you make wedding cakes Jebber? How wonderful! Just as well we didn't keep a tier of our Wedding cake for a Christening cake - it would have been sitting there waiting for over 10 years!  ;D

I was very much an amateur Maddy, I only made cakes for family and friends, as well as square I also made round and hexagonal cakes.  It was a long time ago and I couldn’t manage it now. If you are interested, this was my first effort for eldest son.

How beautiful, very impressed!

Our wedding cake was also made by a friend's mother. In fact, now that I think about, that friend first introduced the family history spark to me when she showed me how to find and use the births, deaths and marriages microfiche at the City of Sydney Library - many, many years ago.  :D
