John Edward Brown b1861c Hucknall Torkard, who is his parents.
« on: Sunday 31 July 22 16:01 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have the marriage for John Edward Brown in 1886 in Bulwell, he married a Kate Brown b 1867 Bulwell. I am trying to find his parents. There are two identical births, same name, same year and same place but only listed as John, not John Edward. The marriage is only a transcript not an image and doesn't give father's name. In 1891 census he's just John then John Edward in the censuses after and it's the same family. His birth date varies from ,1861 to 1864. John and Kate died in Ilkeston in 1941 and 1943.
Any help would be great
Ps there is a John Edward born 1857 Basford and Hucknall Torkard came under Basford around that time.

You need to purchase the marriage cert.  Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874 so his birth may not have been registered

Depending on how important it is, I would be inclined to purchase the marriage certificate.  I can't see an image online.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

These are the baptism details for the Basford birth:

1857 11 30, BASFORD St Leodegarius
John Edward Brown
father Thomas   BROWN, labourer
mother Eliza
Abode Basford

(there were several other baptisms for children of this couple and Thomas's occupation was more usually given as chimney sweep).

I see that John E Brown's dob on the 1939 register was given as 24 April 1860 (of course that might not be right, but it stretches your date span in the first post by an extra year)

I think it could be him, I know in the early births the years were rounded up and I've had discrepancies of up to 5 yrs before. Hucknall Torkard was under Basford at the time of his birth too.
Thankyou

Hucknall Torkard is in the Basford registration district, yes; but my post refers to a baptism in the Basford church and a family living in Basford town. So that is much more specific than the registration district.

The 1841 census was the only one in which ages were rounded down as policy. People simply lied/got it wrong in other censuses!

I'd agree with other posters above - you need to get the marriage certificate for John Edward and Kate. You'll then be able to see for sure who both fathers were.
