John Anderson

I am looking for information on the parents of Janet Anderson, born approx. 1837 in Jamaica.

She married Andrew Bower 30/07/1858 at Blairs Farm, Dunipace, Stirlingshire. Her parents are listed as John Anderson, Landed Proprietor in Jamaica, and Margaret Marshall.

Janet died 02/09/1911 in Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, and her father is listed as John Anderson, Tea Planter, Deceased.

On her Marriage Registration, the witnesses are Peter Anderson and Peter Anderson, both of Blairs Farm. In the 1851 Census, Peter Anderson is the Farmer of Blairs Farm, and there is no sign of Janet. A search shows that Peter was born to Robert Anderson and Margaret Graham in Beath, Fife.

Now Robert and Margaret had a son John, born in Beath in 1807, and I was wondering whether he is the father of Janet and that she was sent back to live with her uncle.

There is a baptism 15 July 1838 in Westmoreland, Jamaica for a Janet ANDERSON (2 yrs)
No parents names given on baptismal record. Abode - Midgham.

However there is a baptism 19 Mar 1837 in the same parish of Westmoreland for a James ANDERSON (6 mnths) with mother recorded as Margaret MARSHALL. Abode – New Hope

There are a couple of possible burials in Jamaica for John Anderson, but the records hold very little detail, and do not give age, or occupation – so may be for the wrong person.

There is possibly another John Anderson in Jamaica with apparently no children.

You'd expect a "Landed Proprietor" to have been noted but there may be a will on the find-a-will site although I haven't checked...

I will add this to the mix - even though I think it is possibly the wrong family. This John may be the one refered to in reply #3

A Dr. James Anderson, of Huntley estate in St. Ann was born 1740, in Scotland, and died 1811, at Huntley. He married a Henrietta [unknown, but quite possibly a Campbell]
Sons: James, b.1766; Adam, 1780-1835; John, 1781-1875.
Hon. Dr. John Anderson, Supreme Court judge and President of the Council of Jamaica died 1875 at Minard. He was then owner of Huntley, Minard and New Hope, all in St. Ann, the latter two being former Campbell properties.
He also owned Rock Pleasant pen in Trelawny, once belonging to Alexander McLachlan [d. 1783] a cousin of Peter Campbell of Fish River who was McLachlan's executor, together with Neill Malcolm.

"The will and three codicils, dated December 27 1860, October 22nd 1861, December 4 1870, and March 7 1874, of Mr John Anderson, late of Wilton, in the parish of St Ann, Jamaica, who died on March 10 last, were proved at the principal registry, London, on the 3d inst. by John Anderson and Charles Partle*, nephews of the deceased, the executors, the personal estate being sworn under £80,000. The testator leaves to his wife all his household goods, furniture and the Wilton estate absolutely, and £20,000 3 per Cent. Stock and £10,000 sterling for life; there are many bequest to nephews and nieces, employιs, and others: several estates in Jamaica are specially devised to his said nephew John Anderson, and he gives him the whole residue of the property"
