Finding a specific paper in Google Newspapers
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 23:43 BST (UK) »
Good morning all,

I can never remember how to use Google newspapers.
I wish to look up a death notice in"The Age", Melbourne, Australia.
I can get the "The Age", but how do I get to the date I want?

I promise to write the instructions down this time.

Regards
Jean Price

PS I mean the newspapers on "Google Newspapers" - not "Trove"

Go to:

https://news.google.com/newspapers

Select 'The Age" then pick the date you want.

That should be a direct link to 'The Age'.

I've attached an image which shows the various fields (boxes).

Where it says 'Date' you should enter the date you want. You have to enter it in the American format which is Month/Day/Year. So if you wanted 17th October 1854 you would write 10/17/1854.

Then just press the 'Go' button, which is next to the date box.

;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

Thank you very much.

Once again I will have to remember to remember to clear the history on my computer.

And. don't you just know it, the paper I want has not been digitised.

Do I take it that the Trove site does not have the year in which you are interested for The Age paper?  Have you tried looking at the Ryerson Index?

https://www.ryersonindex.org/

I'm not suggesting that it will have what you are looking for but it may be worth checking. It does have The Age Melbourne in its list of papers.

Hello Girl Guide,

Yes, I found the date for the publication of a death in the Ryerson Index. The date iis more recent than  that of the papers published on Trove. But the date I want, (The Age) has not been digitised. Dates on either side have been. so perhaps Google could just not find a copy of this paper.

Just mentioning that very often the date given on Ryerson for the publication of the notice is not quite right.
It is worth searching 1 or 2 or even 3 days either side of the date given on Ryerson Index.
