David Wait(e) Carpenter of Shoreditch (c.1738-1793)
« on: Saturday 06 August 22 12:20 BST (UK) »
David Wait(e) (c.1738-1793) a carpenter of New Inn Street, Shoreditch, Middlesex married Eleanor Rice in Christ Church, Spitalfields in 1763. Their first four children were baptised at London Wall Scots Church in front of a 'Scottish Congregation'. He was a prisoner in the King's Bench in 1774 and was buried in Bunhill Fields, Middlesex in 1793. I am unable to trace his birth/baptism and would appreciate any advice.

Hi
Welcome to the forum
Here's what I can find .
David Wait joined the Freemasons 7 Sep 1769 until 2nd June 1773

1780 Bateman's row /New Inn St Shoreditch renting off Lod Viscount Bateman for 15 shillings
1781 New Inn St  rent 16' 8d
1782 rent 15 shillings same address.

Eleanor also burried Bunhill 10.11.1793 age 56 of New Inn St

Childrens names Katherine 1763 , John 1765 ,James 1766,Elizabeth 1768,David 1774 ,Joseph Thomas 1776 ,Christian 1779 (buried 30 Aug 1779 at Bunhill),James 1780 .

So if we go by Scottish naming tradition first son should be David ,second son Father's father  and 3rd maternal grandfather.

It's interesting they have 2 sons called james and thery is a James Wait born 1741 also buried at Bunhill  of White Cross St age 52  28 May 1793 .Could he be a brother?
He seems to have married a Margaret Mather also at Shoreditch 31.1.1765.
witnesses David Wait ,Eleanor Wait and Elizabeth Mather

James Will 1793 gives him as a brandy merchant and they both seem to be living in or near a pub.

James Wait may be the child baptised at St Dustan Stepney 18 Aug 1741
James  sof James and Elizabeth Wait baker Bethnal Green (James 8 days old.)

Brother james buried 5 Jan 1741 ,died of Convulsions
brother John Tanner Wait baptized  1.8.1731  Commercial St baker Spitalfields (buried 22nd Nov 1733) and Richard 30 Dec 1733 of Commercial st baker at Christ Church Spitelfields  but no children I can see baptised in between when David was born .But then being non-conformists they may well have gone to a chapel whose records have not survived.
They is a burial  for James senior at Spitelfields 22.10.1775 age 72 years Paternoster Row.

Best I can do .What do you think?
There is definately a connection between David born 1738 and James 1741 and brothers would make sense.

Brother james buried 5 Jan 1741 ,died of Convulsions

This Jan "1741" comes after December 1741 in the register, so is actually 1742, due to year starting in March. So the James b Aug 1741 died as an infant, so can't be the one who became a brandy merchant.

Thank you all so much for your kind help. Ciderdrinker, wow....I have most of that information and did look into  James being a possible relative, but I didn't discover the Will of the brandy merchant or the signatures of David and Eleanor on the marriage of James. Thank you so much!

The will of James mentions his daughter Isabella.....the James Wait at Scots Church London Wall  ( a Cooper) had a daughter Isabella baptised in 1767. I strongly believe there is a connection and your kind help has found some more pieces to this puzzle. Did you notice that all the men and woman could write?

Good Morning
Yes I did notice that. It's lovely to know they weren't one the bottom of the poverty ladder and were doing quite well for themselves.
