Maid to the Duchess of Gloucester
« on: Saturday 06 August 22 14:29 BST (UK) »
I am researching a number of people who worked for the Duchess of Gloucester and a name that has appeared is Miss Edith Mary Elliott (1891 to 1976). She was a ladys maid to the Duchess in the 1940s and 1950s.
I understand that she was born in Belford and lived part of her early life in Haltwhistle. However, I have no information on that period and this may answer how she came to be working for The Duchess.
Thanks.

If I have the correct Edith's death in 1976 in Northumberland her date of birth is recorded as 20th November 1891. You say you understand she was born in Belford, is this her possible birth

Thanks.

John - thats her and her mother (Ridley)

Jatwit - I have some documentation re the trip to Australia in 1944.

As I said, I can see her service for the Duchess from perhaps as early as the mid 1930s but have nothing about her childhood other than the 1901 Census with her family aged 9.

If you are looking at her ancestry - the 1901/1911/1921 censuses are the places to look.

You can also look for her on the 1939 register
