Marriage in Oakley, Bucks
« on: Sunday 07 August 22 15:29 BST (UK) »
There seems to be a gap 1790-1813 in the online marriage records for Oakley, Buckinghamshire.  I am looking for the marriage of William HIGGS to Elizabeth (surname unkown) sometime between 1795-1805.  Grateful for any advice.  Already know about marriage in Drayton Parslow (25 miles away), which is not the one.

Thanks

David M

Try contacting the records office to enquire if its absent or simply unindexed.
Or better still, search via their online  catalogue.

Thanks - I had seen that, and is partly how I know that the marriages in my period of interest have not been indexed or put online.

the question is, do they (still) exist?

I am 100% certain that either you haven't bothered to go to the records office catalogue to find out, or you didn't read what they had to say about them.

Thanks Steve for confirming that the PRs themselves have gaps, as I feared.  I already had all the other Oakley records but don't expect to get to the record office any time soon.  I also had the Elizabeth Hawes marriage as the nearest candidate.  But a marriage in Oakley would be more certain.  The only thing to do for now is to try to prove or disprove the negative - did that William Higgs and Elizabeth Hawes have another life?

1841 census has William Higgs not born in county.  There is a baptism for the right year of birth(according to his burial)...............

Name - Wilm Higs
Mother - Susanna Higs
Father - Joseph Higs
Baptism - 29 Oct 1775 Charlton on Otmoor, Oxfordshire, England. (6 miles from Oakley, 9 miles from Oxford).

Elizabeth Higgs(Hawes)c1775, b.i.c. in the 1841 census.  A single person 100year search for the whole of Buckingamshire is available from BucksFHS for £1.

Thanks again Steve.  Yes I had those too.  And I'd add Elizabeth Hawes born in Worminghall (just two miles from Oakley) in 1775.  But it would have been easier proceed to the next step by establishing whether there was or wasn't a suitable marriage in Oakley.  Unfortunately, it seems that there is no way past that gap.  Without that I could assess the Hawes-Higgs marriage to be possible, even quite likely,  but no more
