Two baptisms for Amy Lake (1728) - same person?
« on: Wednesday 10 August 22 13:41 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a baptism record for Amy Lake and have found two. Both are on 28 Apr 1728. One is in Merton and the other in Meeth. The Meeth one is to William Gill and Susan Lake and the other to John and Susanna Lake. Merton is a couple miles away from Meeth and, given the proximity, date and similar name for the mother it makes me ask if these are the same person? I guess the Gill/Lake baptism is baseborn, so was there any such practice where a baby could be baptised to the mother and another guardian from her family, or is this just a coincidence?

Best wishes

Possibly the same child:

Image on FindMyPast at Merton states - Amy the base child of Susanna Lake the daughter of John Lake, the reputed father of this child being William Gill, was baptised 28 April 1728.

I haven't seen the Meeth baptism entry - yet!!
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

As seen by BumbleB but posted anyway!

The Merton baptism (image) is on FindMyPast and reads
"1728 - Amy, the base child of Susanna Lake the daughter of John Lake, the reputed father of the child being William Gill, was baptised April 28th

The Meeth is a transcript only.

As stated by hanes teulu, the Meeth entry is a transcription only, from Family Search.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Ah perfect! So it's just Ancestry reading the John's name in the baptism and assuming he's the father. Brilliant, thank you  :)

One reason why we should always view actual documents.

The register FindMyPast say is from Merton describes itself as from Meeth. The Familysearch record comes from the BTs for Meeth. So there was only one actual baptism. Familysearch have the BT images, this is the one you want: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-893K-LGBP?i=49&cat=1834104 . Unsurprisingly, it reads  almost exactly the same as the other record.
