Hi John
Thanks for all your help. I have a photo of their grave. The four girls moved up here I think John and James may have stayed there in Devon I was thinking both Naval men?
For some strange reason they named two girls Catherine; first was born in 1847 2nd born in 1853.
Catherine 1 was down as Ellen for some reason and took a while to trace her birth, we couldn't find an Ellen so don't know how my uncle found her?? She was my 3rd Great Grandmother
In 1864 in Parkgate here in Wirral she gave birth to John Hayes no father no marriage hence the Hayes continuation. John was down on census as grandson but on his marriage to Mary Wills in 1882 he cited John snr as his father, but we knew then it was wrong so we assumed he never knew John was his grandfather. Did his mother become his "sister"?
His birth wasn't registered until March 1865 which was strange.
His mother/sister married twice one was short lived her husband died a year later and she remarried but never had any more children but did bring up his four children from his previous marriage, he was a widower. Like all family history we find a few secrets and skeletons!
