GRO butterflies
« on: Friday 12 August 22 13:39 BST (UK) »
I'm waiting for my email from GRO with a certificate and I feel excited like a kid.  It's not a particularly crucial link in any chain.  It's not my first time ordering a certificate.  I don't know what's got into me.

Yes, they want to be found! ;D

Hope the cert comes fast and fulfills expectations, reveals surprises, pathes the way for more research .. all the good stuff .. nothing like the thrill of the chase.  Let us know if things turn out well ..

I always get excited waiting for certificates to arrive.  I think with me it's because of having to wait a few days for them.  Often these days we order things and they are instantly delivered so I think I appreciate the anticipation of seeing if there will be helpful information or if I've ordered the wrong certificate!

My Granddad's Birth Certificate of his 2nd Son William Henry  was a and his 3rd Child in May 1915 was a Shock
I had a Portrait Postcard dated April 1915 to his Parents asking if his Wife had given Birth yet
to their 3rd yet ?

His Medal Card showed he went overseas 7 March 1915 to Flanders
the PostCard asked his Parents could they get him Home ?

Surprise Surprise
the Birth Certificate showed he did get Home on Leave for 2 weeks ?
As he was the Informant who Registered the Birth at the local Registry Office in Mid May1915 of William Henry
When he returned to his Unit in Belgium many of his Unit were Killed in Action while he was away.
Had he not been allowed Leave, I would not be here now, writing this.

I recall the days when my Irish certs. (some now available online to download free) were costly (full price) & by post, the anticipation & excitement was always higher than those downloadable there & then on scotlandspeople.

Ditto with my English certs. at full price prior to Pdfs via email which I haven't used yet!

My biggest surprise was finding out my maternal g/father had been widowed prior to marrying my g/mother.
I'd known my mother had a brother although I didn't know he was her half brother & as my mother was orphaned aged 6/7 yrs old, I don't think my mother knew her brother was from a previous marriage.
My mother was only 43 yrs old when she passed away, knowing nothing of her roots i.e. all the info. I was able to find was like winning the lottery & every cert. I could order (via post was the only option available) was a 'Butterfly' time for me, so exciting as I'd known nothing of my maternal heritage except my g/parents names!
I'm now further back with my maternal line (Irish & English) than my Scottish (as I am) paternal line but only because records for my maternal line are more accessible/available.
