St Mary's gravestones
« on: Friday 12 August 22 14:33 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me - I have a family story of many gravestones (including that of a Kite ancestor) at St Mary's (?)  Church, Dover, were placed up against the church wall for some reason - road widening etc?. Trying to verify or disprove this.
Roberts, Caernarfon. Thomas, Caernarfon. Kite, Kent.

I can’t speak for St. Mary’s in Dover, but it is quite common practice in many places these days, it Facilitates the upkeep of the churchyard, mowing the grass etc.

I know it had been  done at St. George’s Deal, when I visited  there years ago .

I was  told if they want to move a gravestone if it is broken or dangerous they write to the people who own the deeds of the grave , in my case they wrote to the person in  the grave, he owned  the deeds of the grave , strangely they got no reply !!,

They lay the tablets usually  against  a wall
