finding where my convict relations worked
« on: Sunday 14 August 22 10:01 BST (UK) »
Hi, I may have posted something similar in the past so my apologies. I just haven't been on roots chat for a long time.  Trying to find out about the work history of my G G grandfather  Michael Honan, a convict sentenced to 7yrs and who worked for Fitz Herbert Miller Mundy at one stage and Michael's wife Winnifred Heffernan, a bounty immigrant. The dates are 1835 for Michael till 1841. and 1841 for Winnifred. Unsure if she was still working for someone after the wedding in August 1841. Where would I go to look to find out the work and employment history of these two? Many thanks, Hereford

Do you have all of his convict related records? Some of these might tell you who he worked for.

If there are any records of Winnifred she is likely to be noted as looking after the family even if she did other work.

The children’s birth records may note father’s occupation. Also Michael and Winnifred’s marriage and death certificates.

Their location/address might give some clues as to their occupations, eg living in the middle of nowhere - possibly farm workers or work with stock.

Have you checked Trove in case they got a mention in the paper at some stage?

In later years I would look at electoral rolls for occupations.

Others might have better suggestions. Generally It might be hard to put together a full employment history especially in the 1840s.

Hi sorry for the delay in responding I have Michael's death cert which has very little information. I'm waiting for the birth certs of the children.I do have a mention of his master being F M Mundy and he first went to St Vincent with his brother Thomas. I have birth and baptism records from a historical society. Just waiting for more information to arrive, Thanks Hereford,

Do you know  anything about which settlement they were sent to as convicts?    That would give you a state to start your search.
Their convict records would probably give you some ideas of the type of work.   Convicts had fairly good records of their activities for as long as they remained convict.

Hard to tell, but it looks as if they were married in Australia - is that correct?
