Pub or House?
« on: Wednesday 17 August 22 10:41 BST (UK) »
An ancestor is living at "The Haven," School Road, in the Sparkhill Ward in 1930/31. I had assumed that this was a private house and that he and his wife had two female lodgers living with them, but have just stumbled on a website listing lost Birmingham pubs, which mentions "The Haven" in School Road, but no other details. "The Haven" isn't given a street number of its own but falls between 243 and 265 School Road on the Electoral Roll. The same couple went on to manage the Royal Oak Hotel in Stratford Road, Hockley Heath, circa 1939, so it wouldn't come as a surprise to find that they had done it before. Any help on unravelling this one would be appreciated.

It was The Haven Hotel.

A Mrs Marson is adverting for a domestic to assist with cooking in July 1934. That's the first newspaper mention I could find. The latest I could find was in 1975.

ADDED

Just found a lot of adverts for dances held there in 1933.

Shaun, you're a star! I was worried that the two places might be completely different, but you've confirmed I wasn't barking up the wrong tree. The Marsons disappear after about 1945 - or at least I can't find anything more on them after this - so this is a big help.

On this OS map there is a large inn marked at the far end of The Haven cul de sac - I wonder if that was it:

Very likely, because - oh glory be! - I've just found a beautiful photo of it at www.birminghamslostbuildings.com/suburbs-public-houses

That would explain why the big gap in house numbers on the Electoral Roll.

I found an O.S. map dated 1921 with the inn marked on it, Shaun, so it may have been in existence at least ten years earlier than previously thought. It was probably built to service the residents of the cul-de-sac, as the houses around it were put up as council housing in the 1920s, apparently. It would be interesting to see if there was a much older pub on the site originally!

It can't be the inn marked on the OS map that I posted. The photos on the lost buildings website confirm that the Haven Hotel was located on the main road (School Road).

I believe this is the site - as you said it's between 245 and 265 School Road

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Shaun. As you can tell, I don't know the area!

Sadly The Haven was demolished some years ago and replaced by a care home.
