Howell Family
« on: Wednesday 17 August 22 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I've been stuck on this brick wall for a while concerning my ancestor Jeremiah Howell. A convict he was sent to Tasmania in the mid 1840s. Records state he was from Bath/Holloway. Many users online have his birth listed as 11 June 1826 but fail to list any source. I was wondering if anyone was aware of Somerset church records that may not be online or have been destroyed. I've been unable to find a baptism record for him across multiple genealogical sites.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Henry

There is no parish of Holloway, it was part of the parish of Lyncombe and Widcombe, whose registers are available on Ancestry and FreeREG.  There is a small chapel of St Mary Magdalen there but as far as I know there are no surviving registers specifically for the chapel and if anyone was baptised there it would be recorded in the L&W register. Certainly many of the entries in that register are for people from Holloway, which was one of the more populous parts of the parish.

Jeremiah was living at Holloway at the time of the 1841 census, but that doesn't mean he was born there. Although there do seem to be several other Howells from there baptised at L&W around the same time.

I've just remembered another gap in the records which may be relevant: Bath Catholic baptisms. Nothing online as far as I know. There is a printed transcript at Bath Archives but it only goes up to early 1825. It does contain several Howells but no Jeremiah. Most are before 1800 but there was a Maria confirmed in 1821.

I don't know where later records can be found. Bath comes under the Clifton Catholic Diocese, so their Archives would be somewhere to ask. https://cliftondiocese.com/departments/services-and-commisions/archive/

In 1841 census the Jeremy Howell age 15 is living on a street or area of Lydcombe and Widcombe called Holloway.
It's between Bridge Place and a Pub called the Old Fox

This discussion started in the Warwickshire section (because there was another Jeremiah Howell transported from there around the same time). There are several sources and links quoted there.
